Today I want to tell you something interesting about Venice!

Venice is a wonderful place in the world. It's the most romantic city in Italy. I've spent there just one day  and I fell in love with it. Venice has something to offer for everyone - bridges, Grand Canal, beautiful palaces, narrow streets. Many famous people were born here. Some of them are Giacomo Casanova, Antonio Vivaldi, Marco Polo.

  1. Venice is a city in northern Italy.  The capital of the region Veneto.
  2. The city consists of 118 small islands.
  3. According to the legend, Venice was founded on March 25 in the year 421.
  4. Venice was known  as a very important center of commerce in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
  5. The name Venice connected with the Latin word "Venetus" and means 'sea-blue'.
  6. People in different times gave it  different names: "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Bridges", "City of Water", "Serenissima".

  1. If you want to learn a real Venice, you should leave noisy crowd and get lost among the deserted streets of the city. Don't forget a map! :)
  2. There are only 400 licensed Gondolas  in Venice today, because the applicants must pass a hard exam to get a license. Only 3 - 4 Gondolier licenses are issued annually. 
  3. Venetian gondola is usually 11m long, and weighs 600 kilograms!
  4. You should never  touch the produce in the markt! You can ask a street vendor to give you what you want and he gives you it with pleasure. 
  5. Not many of us might know that Venice is slowly sinking. Maybe in the year 2028 the city will not be suitable for life.
  6. The Venetian buildings are constructed on closely spaced wood piles. The foundation lies on the piles, and buildings of brick or stone sit above these. 
  7. Venice has no sewer system.
  8. The entrance in city used today was actually the secondary one. 
  9. The famous Venice Carnival starts around 2 weeks before Ash Wednesday and ends on Shrove Tuesday.
